사모아에 사는 한국인은 0.5명이다. 변호사이자 사모아 총영사인 제리 브런트 씨에게 한국인 거주 통계가 있는지 물어보니, 본인의 아버지가 한국인이기 때문에 0.5명인 셈이라고 우스갯소리를 했다. 몇 번의 시도가 있었지만, 실질적으로 사모아에 정착한 한국 사람은 한 명도 없다. 바로 옆에 미국령인 아메리칸 사모아가 있기 때문인데, 사모아가 원양어선 기지였던 한때 무려 3000명 이상이 거주하기도 했다. 지금은 300명 정도의 교민이 있다고 한다. 상식적으로도 미국령인 나라에 사는 것이 물자, 복지, 사회기반 수준 면에서는 훨씬 편리할 게 분명하다. 하지만 편리함으로 따지면 굳이 한국을 떠날 필요는 없다. 요즘같이 장강명의 '한국이 싫어서'라는 소설 제목이 와 닿을 때는 사모아 생각이 간절하다. 한국사람이 없고 전통과 질서, 무엇보다 상식이 살아있는 있는 청정 자연 사모아라. 모험심이 강한 나로서는 사모아의 최초 한국인 거주자로 역사에 기록되고 싶은 욕심도 생긴다… (매일경제: 2016.11.14)
